St. Anthony Enthroned as Patron Saint of the Sri Lankan Catholic Community In Romania

On Sunday, July 27th, 2025, the Sri Lankan Roman Catholic community in Romania gathered at St. Joseph Cathedral in Bucharest for a spiritually uplifting ceremony: the declaration of St. Anthony of Padua as the Patron Saint of Sri Lankans in Romania and of the Catholic faithful of Bucharest.

The celebration was presided over by His Excellency Archbishop Aurel Percă and graced by Her Excellency Madurika Joseph Weninger, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Romania, together with clergy, dignitaries, and members of the community. The liturgy unfolded with reverence and joy, with the declaration of St. Anthony as Patron by Rev. Fr. Claude Perera, followed by the blessings and guidance from the Archbishop Percă.

On this special day, a new committee was also appointed to guide the Sri Lankan Catholic community in Bucharest, helping it to grow spiritually and to remain united in faith. Their commitment will ensure that the seeds planted here will continue to bear fruit for years to come.

For us Sri Lankans, this moment carries deep personal meaning. St. Anthony is one of the most beloved saints of our homeland, a companion in our families and parishes, and someone we turn to in both need and thanksgiving. His enthronement in Bucharest is a spiritual bridge, bringing the comfort of home while guiding us in our lives abroad.

The presence and support of both the Archdiocese of Bucharest and the Sri Lankan Embassy affirm that our community is embraced and valued. As the statue of St. Anthony was carried out in procession with hymns and applause, we felt the blessing of a new chapter. With St. Anthony as our Patron, we look ahead with faith, gratitude, and unity.
