Saint Anthony of Padua Declared Patron of the Sri Lankan Community in the Archdiocese of Bucharest

On Sunday, July 27, 2025, Saint Joseph Cathedral in Bucharest hosted a unique celebration through which Saint Anthony of Padua was declared patron of the Sri Lankan Catholic community in the Archdiocese of Bucharest, in the presence of His Grace Aurel Percă, Metropolitan Archbishop of Bucharest, and the priests of the Cathedral. This represents a landmark moment for Sri Lankan Catholics in Romania, more than a year after the celebration of the first Holy Liturgy in Sinhala language at St. Joseph Cathedral on Easter Sunday (March 31, 2024), which marked the presence of a stable faith community.

The celebration began with the Holy Liturgy celebrated in Sinhala language by Fr. Katunayakage Claude Sandaruwan Perera, chaplain of the Sri Lankan community in the Archdiocese of Bucharest. Father Perera explained the spiritual significance of this moment, solemnly declaring Saint Anthony of Padua as patron of the Sri Lankans in Romania and of the community in Bucharest. After the proclamation, His Grace Aurel Percă blessed and crowned the statue of Saint Anthony of Padua.

A special aspect of the celebration was represented by the commitment of several members of the Sri Lankan community to serve as leaders within the Sri Lankan Catholic Community of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Bucharest. They officially took their oaths during the ceremony, in the presence of His Grace Aurel Percă and the attending priests. The ceremony was attended by Her Excellency Ms. Mariez Enid Madurika Joseph Weninger, Ambassador of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, and members of the diplomatic corps.

“I am happy to have this celebration in which you have chosen Saint Anthony of Padua as your patron,” stated His Grace Aurel Percă in his speech at the end of the celebration. His Grace Aurel Percă declared that Fr. Claude Pereira will ensure the pastoral care of the Sri Lankan community in Bucharest, as well as other Sri Lankan Catholic communities in Romania, “under the benevolent gaze of St. Anthony of Padua,” at Saint Joseph Cathedral, which has already become a reference point for Sri Lankan Catholics working in Bucharest.

At the same time, in his capacity as Pastor of the Archdiocese, His Grace Aurel Percă expressed his joy in shepherding the Sri Lankan Catholic community, emphasizing the importance of unity within this community, both among its Catholic members and with their Buddhist compatriots.

“I am happy, as Pastor of this Archdiocese, knowing that we thus form a family, the Sri Lankan family within the Romanian family,” declared His Grace Aurel Percă. “I wish you to feel at home here, even though you are far from your homeland, Sri Lanka,” continued the Archbishop of Bucharest, emphasizing that their presence at the Cathedral is an opportunity to draw closer not only to the community’s pastor, but also to the Romanian priests and faithful who participate in the Liturgy here. In conclusion, His Grace Aurel Percă entrusted all those present to the intercession of Saint Anthony of Padua.

At the end, His Grace Aurel Percă presented symbolic gifts to the community’s benefactors, and the community’s Chaplain and one of the community leaders thanked His Grace Aurel Percă and the Cathedral priests for their love and pastoral care for the Bucharest community.

The statue of Saint Anthony of Padua was carried in procession to the chapel in the Cathedral’s basement, where it was solemnly installed for the liturgical celebrations of the Sri Lankans in the Archdiocese of Bucharest.
